How much paint does one room actually take? · Al Madina Paint House

Work it out before you come to the shop. A simple way to turn a room into litres — and the four things that make a wall drink more paint than the tin says.

Buying paint by guesswork goes wrong in both directions. Too little and the second coat is a different batch; too much and a half-full drum sits in a store room until it is useless. The arithmetic is not hard.

Measure the walls, not the floor
Add up the length of all four walls, and multiply by the height. A room 12 ft by 14 ft with a 10 ft ceiling gives a perimeter of 52 ft, so 52 × 10 = 520 square feet of wall.
Then subtract the openings. A door is roughly 20 sq ft and an average window about 15. Two doors and two windows takes that 520 down to about 450 sq ft. If you are painting the ceiling too, that is length × width — 168 sq ft here — and it usually wants its own tin, because ceilings are commonly a different shade.

Turn feet into litres
As a working figure, one litre covers about 100–120 sq ft in one coat on a properly prepared wall. Assume two coats — one coat over a colour change never looks even, whatever the tin says.
So: 450 sq ft × 2 coats ÷ 110 = about 8 litres. In the sizes we sell, that is roughly two gallons, and you would buy the nearest size up rather than exactly.

Four things that make a wall drink more

Fresh plaster. New work is thirsty and can take noticeably more on the first coat. A primer costs less than the extra paint it saves.
A rough or sandy surface. More surface area than a smooth wall, so more paint for the same square footage.
A dark colour going over a light one, or the reverse. Deep reds and strong yellows in particular may want three coats to look solid.
Brush and roller instead of spray. Different waste, different coverage — tell us which you are using.

Buy the sizes, not the litres
Paint comes in fixed sizes — quarter, gallon, drum — so the real question is which combination covers your figure with the least left over. It is usually cheaper per litre to go up a size than to buy several small tins, and a single larger tin also means one batch, which matters for colour.
One batch is worth planning for. Two tins of the same shade mixed at different times can differ very slightly, and on a long wall in daylight that difference shows. If a room needs more than one tin, buy them together.

Bring your room measurements to the counter and we will work the quantity out with you, in the sizes we actually stock.
